Genjyo Sanzo is hardly what you would call your average Buddhist priest.

He smokes, drinks, curses, carries a gun (and won't hesitate to shoot you in the face), and even has hair. And to be frank, he could also care less. If his personality were to be summed up in a single word, it would be a simple choice: grumpy. This young man, approximately 23 years old, always seem to have a perpetually unamused frown etched onto his face. Easily annoyed, he won't hesitate to tell you to "shut the hell up", "I'll kill you", or "Die", and he has very little patience reserved for those he thinks of as morons.

His "I-don't-give-a-shit" attitude also extends towards what others may think of him; bound by nothing, his philosophy is basically that one should live for oneself and nothing more. Despite him being a Buddhist priest, and a high-ranking Sanzo at that, he's hardly what you would call pious or reverent. He even states, "Embrace nothing. If you meet the Buddha, kill the Buddha. If you meet your father, kill your father. Only live your life as it is, not bound to anything", which only reinforces both his character and thought process of trusting in only himself and no one else.

He does, however, possess a decent amount of judgment and good reasoning, which is something very vital to him and his companions as they travel to the West.
